Substation approval from the Chief Electric Inspector (OCEI)
A new substation needs approval from the Office of the Chief Electric Inspector (OCEI) before it is energised. The OCEI runs an e-service portal for substation approvals, contractor licences and electrician licences.

Who files the application
The owner is the applicant. A licensed contractor normally prepares the drawings and documents and files them with the owner's papers. We do this for every substation we build, and we confirm the current process at survey.

Frequently asked questions
Who applies for substation approval: the owner or the contractor?
The owner is the applicant. The licensed contractor usually prepares the drawings and documents and files them with the owner's papers. We do this for you.
How long does OCEI approval take?
It depends on how complete the file is and on inspection scheduling. A complete, correct file avoids most delays.
Can a substation be energised before approval?
No. Inspection and approval come before the supply is switched on.
