How to increase your meter load (DESCO, DPDC)

A load increase raises the sanctioned load on your meter. The utility handles the meter side. Your own wiring, MCB and DB must also be able to carry the new load.

Steps

  1. 1

    Work out the new load

List your current and planned appliances: ACs, water heater, lift, pump, machines.

  2. 2

    Check the wiring

Make sure cables, MCBs and the DB can carry the higher current.

  3. 3

    Apply to the utility

Submit the load increase application with your account details and documents.

  4. 4

    Inspection and payment

The utility inspects and issues a demand note for any charges.

  5. 5

    Meter change

The utility updates or replaces the meter for the new load.

Wiring check before you apply

A load increase on old wiring is a fire risk. We check your cables, DB and earthing first and tell you exactly what must change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to change my wiring when I increase load?

Often, yes. If the main cable, MCBs or DB can't carry the new current, they must be upgraded before or along with the load increase.

My MCB trips when the AC starts. Do I need a load increase?

Maybe, but the wiring or MCB rating may also be the problem. We check both before you apply.

When do I need three phase?

Usually when you add large ACs, a lift, pumps or machines. We work out what you need at survey.
